About Psychotherapy...

Psychotherapy is much more than just “talking about your problems”. It is a treatment of mental or emotional disorders and adjustment problems based on a professional therapeutic relationship and through the use of psychological techniques.   There are many different types of psychotherapy.  My practice is based on alternative and innovative approaches that incorporate every aspect of the person as a whole (mind, body, emotions and spirit) as well as one’s connection with the social and ecological environment.

Self-exploration can be uncomfortable at times.  It can triggers feelings, thoughts and memories which are troubling.  However, the benefits may be very significant.   To get the most out of psychotherapy, I recommend that you :

  • Patient: Problems take a long while to develop and be identified; they seldom disappear overnight.
  • Take responsibility: As a psychotherapist, I do have the knowledge to facilitate change and healing;  you have the knowledge of your inner life.  To be an active player in your process, you need to take the risk of disclosure and to respect, question and challenge your habits, feelings and thoughts.
  • Commit yourself: The most important work takes place between our sessions, in your day-to-day life. It will take courage, effort and perseverance to become aware and do the work that is needed to change or heal.  Learning to catch yourself before you react in the same old way, and choosing to respond in a new way are the first big steps toward transforming your life.
  • Be realistic: Though many of us may aspire to ‘happily ever after,’ we live in an imperfect world, and we are all imperfect – even when we are doing the best we can! Take time to sort out what you can realistically expect of yourself, your life, your partner and your relationships.
  • Take care of yourself:  Psychotherapy is not an easy process: your work will be best supported by a healthy lifestyle including, exercise, nutrition, sleep, leisure time, contact with nature, emotional support, etc.  Be kind to yourself, create and maintain those things in your life that bring you comfort and peace.
